New bioequivalent option for Effexor XR capsules

  • Venlafaxine extended release tablets are now available at the generic copayment.
  • Because this option is available as a tablet and not a capsule prescribers need to write a new prescription for venlafaxine extended release tablets to help their patients save money.

Information about new and existing prescriptions

  • Starting March 1, 2009 all new prescriptions for Effexor XR® will be covered at the non-formulary/non-preferred copayment.
  • Members currently on Effexor XR will not see their copayment change until June 1, 2009. This should give prescribers time to talk to patients about the new tablet option. After June 1, 2009 Effexor XR will only be covered at the non-formulary/non-preferred copayment.

Advantages of venlafaxine extended release  tablets

  • Venlafaxine extended release tablets will be covered by Regence at a generic copayment, lowering out-of-pocket costs for members.
  • No prior authorization is needed for venlafaxine extended release tablets. Effexor XR capsules will continue to need prior authorization.
  • The FDA found venlafaxine extended release tablets to be bioequivalent to Effexor XR capsules.
  • Venlafaxine extended release tablets come in the same strengths as Effexor XR capsules and are also available in a 225 mg tablet strength.
