Alternatives to Non-Formulary Medications

Research shows that the more involved you are in your health care, the better the results and the more satisfied you'll feel. That’s why it is very important for our members to work with their doctor when a treatment is selected. There are often many medications available that treat the same condition.

A pharmacist may be able to direct both the member and their doctor to a medication that is similar to the one they are already on, but costs less. We also encourage members taking a non-preferred product to discuss these preferred alternatives with their doctor.

Alternatives to Non-Formulary Medications

• Generic medications are listed in lower-case, bold print. Brand-name medications in parentheses after a generic are provided only as a reference. Example: lisinopril (Zestril^®, Prinivil^®).
• Exact generic equivalents are marked with a “†” symbol. Example: simvastatin^†
• Brand-name medications are designated with a “^®” symbol.
• Sustained action/release, extended-release or long-acting products are indicated as “SA”, “SR”, “ER” or “LA”.
• Other, less-expensive options may be available over the counter (OTC) without a prescription. OTC products generally are not a covered prescription benefit unless listed.
